I think you should follow one general plan for what this part of the training is. Basically here I think you said that this is going to be building duration on the bottle in your hand (you can get double duty out of all these written plans because we will use it for Pendleton as well.  I imagine you will do more than one set per day. You can delete this italicized notes when you fill in these explanatory narratives.

Targeting In Hand: Step 2: Day 1: All three dogs

GOAL: a.  Teach new odor in hand;

TRAINER COMMENTS: Began with with all three dogs ( Pendleton, Jackson, and Gonzo,  nose targeting nose targeting the scent box,, getting reward at the  box.  Next I will work on getting duration on the box before the reward. ( Sample )

TRAINING PLAN

 Step 1: 

STEP 1:  SCENT POTS

a. Teach scent pots

 b. Select and teach your indicating behavior

Once your dog is consistently recognizing and indicating the source odor with his easily identifiable alerting behavior THEN re-teach Scent Pots from the beginning using a different odor and different containers.

Step 2

a. Teach new odor in hand play the game in hand until he begins to offer his alerting behavior

b introduce the scent wheel

c. Teach the dog to move around the wheel 


Step 3

a. Adding variables to the scent wheel

b. Deliberately cross contaminate


Step 4

USING STRESS SCENT

a. Reteach from beginning using scent sample

b. Dog meets Baseline Criteria

Baseline Criteria:  3 successive sets of 90%+ conducted on 2 subsequent sessions.


The criteria of switching from training mode to testing mode should be 

  • eager enthusiasm for the game; 
  • being able to find and alert to 3 different scents on the scent wheel; 
  • clear and consistent alerts.
